The High Court of Meghalaya has released notification for 2 Law Clerk-cum-Legal Research Assistant posts in Shillong on a contractual basis. High Court of Meghalaya Law Clerk Recruitment 2026 - 2 Posts

The High Court of Meghalaya (Meghalaya HC), Shillong has invited applications for contractual engagement to 2 posts of Law Clerks-cum-Legal Research Assistants. These Law Clerks will be attached to the Hon'ble Judges of the High Court and will assist them with day-to-day judicial work including legal research, case preparation, and note-taking. Final year law students are also eligible to apply, subject to furnishing proof of degree at the time of interview. This is a great opportunity for fresh law graduates to gain hands-on experience working directly with High Court Judges.

Who Can Apply?

  • Qualification: You must have an LL.B degree from any recognized university in India, whether enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council or not.
  • Final Year Students: If you are in the final year of any accredited law course, you are eligible to apply. However, you must provide proof of your law qualification at the time of the interview.
  • Computer Knowledge: You must have basic knowledge of computer operations, including retrieval of legal information from search engines and databases such as Manupatra, SCC Online, Lexis Nexis, and Westlaw.
  • Nationality: You must be an Indian national.
  • Disqualification: You cannot be a practicing advocate or engaged elsewhere on honorarium or payment basis. You must also not be involved in any criminal case, whether convicted or pending trial.

Age Limit

  • Minimum age: 23 years
  • Maximum age: 33 years
  • Age calculated as on: 20 March 2026 (date of advertisement)

Salary

  • You will receive a fixed consolidated remuneration per month as decided by the High Court from time to time.
  • No additional allowances such as dearness allowance or other perquisites are provided.
  • Proportionate reduction will be made for unauthorized absence or absence beyond the permissible leave period.

Selection Process

  1. Application Screening: Your application will be reviewed for completeness and eligibility. Incomplete or defective applications will be rejected outright.
  2. Personal Interview: An Interview Board constituted by the Hon'ble Chief Justice will assess your suitability based on academic career, extra-curricular achievements, and performance during the interview.
  3. Merit-Based Selection: Final selection will be in the order of merit as recommended by the Interview Board.

How to Apply

  2. Fill in all fields completely, including personal details, educational qualifications from HSLC onwards, advocate enrollment details, computer knowledge, and any pending civil or criminal cases.
  3. Affix a latest coloured passport-size photograph (signed and attested by a Gazetted Officer) on the application form.
  4. Attach certified copies of your age proof, educational certificates, extra-curricular activity certificates, and computer knowledge certificates.
  5. Prepare a Demand Draft or Postal Order of Rs. 100/- drawn in favour of the Registrar General, High Court of Meghalaya.
  6. Include a checklist of all certificates and testimonials enclosed with the form.
  7. Place the application in an envelope clearly marked "APPLICATION FOR THE POST OF LAW CLERK-CUM-LEGAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT".
  8. Send it by Speed Post, Registered Post A.D., or Courier, or deposit it in person at the office of the Registrar General, High Court of Meghalaya, Shillong during office hours.
  9. Your application must reach the office on or before 10 April 2026. Late applications will not be accepted and the High Court will not be responsible for postal delays.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Hon'ble Judge in reading case files and preparing comprehensive case summaries, chronology of events, and notes on the legal questions involved.
  • Research legal points, principles, and relevant case-law under the control and guidance of the assigned Judge.
  • Search out case law, articles, papers, and other relevant material required for the discharge of judicial and administrative functions.
  • Take down notes of arguments and prepare notes on facts of each case during court proceedings.
  • Identify facts, issues, and questions that may arise during arguments or that may be relevant for judgment.
  • Maintain a retrievable record of judgments delivered by the Hon'ble Judge along with the points of law decided in each case.
  • Handle administrative correspondence, maintain administrative files, and manage particular judicial files when entrusted.
  • Assist the Hon'ble Judge in preparing speeches, academic papers, and other publications as required.

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

LL.B degree from a recognized university in India

Preferred Qualification

Certificate or diploma course in computer operations from a recognized institute

Required Skills
