TIFR Junior Research Fellow & Postdoctoral Fellow Recruitment 2026 - 2 Posts

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), an autonomous institution under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, has opened positions for one Junior Research Fellow and one Postdoctoral Fellow under Advertisement No. 2026/4. These posts are part of a joint research project with Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), one of India's leading cancer treatment hospitals, under the guidance of Prof. Shravan M Hanasoge (TIFR) along with Profs. Rajdeep Sensarma and Sandip Trivedi. The project focuses on using advanced AI and deep learning to extract quantitative biomarkers from histopathology images to better understand cancer biology. Appointment is initially for one year, extendable up to three years based on performance.

  • Junior Research Fellow (JRF): 1 post — for candidates with strong analytical skills and Python proficiency

Who Can Apply?

For Junior Research Fellow:

  • Qualification: Graduate-level degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in machine learning, computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, or a related quantitative field
  • Skills: Comfort with Python and scientific data analysis tools (NumPy, SciPy, pandas, matplotlib). Familiarity with machine learning methods is a plus but not required
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; ability to work independently and in a team

For Postdoctoral Fellow:

  • Qualification: PhD in machine learning, computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, or a related quantitative field
  • Skills: Experience with Python-based scientific computing, machine learning frameworks, and prior research publications

Age Limit

  • Junior Research Fellow: Age preferably below 30 years as on the date of application
  • Postdoctoral Fellow: Age preferably below 35 years as on the date of application

Salary

  • Junior Research Fellow: Rs. 37,000 per month + HRA (Housing and Rent Allowance as per TIFR rules)
  • Postdoctoral Fellow: Rs. 58,000 to Rs. 67,000 per month + HRA (depending on experience, as per TIFR rules)
  • Compensation follows standard TIFR norms for both positions

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement machine learning algorithms for analysis of histopathology images
  • Extract quantitative biomarkers from cancer tissue data using deep learning and image analysis tools
  • Design robust computational pipelines combining deep learning, image analysis, and statistical modelling
  • Work with clinically grounded datasets in collaboration with scientists and clinicians at TMC
  • Contribute to representation learning, geometric structure extraction, and predictive modelling tasks
  • Prepare research reports, presentations, and co-author academic publications
  • Participate in group meetings and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams at TIFR and TMC

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

Graduate degree in Machine Learning / Computer Science / Physics / Mathematics / Engineering or related field (PhD required for Postdoctoral Fellow)

Preferred Qualification

Familiarity with machine learning methods; Python programming (NumPy, SciPy, pandas, matplotlib); prior research experience
