The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), one of India's top-ranked engineering and research institutions, has released Advertisement No. ICSR/PR/Advt.42/2026 for 1 Post Doctoral Researcher position. This role is based at the Centre for Sustainable Energy, a premier research initiative established in partnership with Coal India Limited to drive India's shift to a low-carbon economy.

Who Can Apply?

Educational Qualification

  • PhD in Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences, Geology/Geotechnical Engineering, or related fields from a reputed institution

Other Requirements

  • You must be a citizen of India (persons from Pakistan settling permanently in India or subjects of Nepal are also eligible with a Government of India certificate)

Salary

  • Monthly pay: Rs. 60,000/-
  • HRA (House Rent Allowance) is provided in addition to the monthly pay

Selection Process

About the Centre for Sustainable Energy

The Centre for Sustainable Energy at IIT Madras focuses on developing and deploying technologies to drive India's shift to a low-carbon economy. Established in strategic partnership with Coal India Limited, the Centre works on solutions for utilizing coal and coal mines as a resource. It operates on a hub-and-spoke model, coordinating large-scale projects with PSUs, government bodies, and industry partners to drive India's Net Zero goals.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessment of mines for conversion into high-efficiency, secure underground data centres
  • Assess goafs for compressed air energy storage (CAES) applications
  • Handle site evaluation and assessment for sustainable energy projects
  • Prepare design specifications and detailed project reports
  • Work on regulatory and safety framework development
  • Manage interdisciplinary collaboration with partnering institutions and consultants
  • Follow project timelines and deliver milestone-driven research outputs
  • Assist in interfacing with research experts, mining engineers, vendors, and industrial partners

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

PhD in Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences, Geology/Geotechnical Engineering, or related fields

Preferred Qualification

Background in mining R&D with knowledge of geological analysis, modelling tools, and thermal modelling tools
