Raman Research Institute (RRI) is an autonomous research institute under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, located in Bengaluru. The institute was founded by Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman in 1948 and currently focuses on four research areas: Astronomy & Astrophysics, Light & Matter Physics, Soft Condensed Matter, and Theoretical Physics. The Director serves as the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the Institute, responsible for overall administration and providing high-level academic leadership. This recruitment is open through Direct Recruitment, Deputation (including short-term contract), and Re-employment.

Who Can Apply?

Essential Qualification:

• Education: Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Physical Sciences
• Post-Doctoral Research: Must have completed post-doctoral research
• Publications/Patents: Original published work of high standard and/or national and international patents
• Citizenship: Must be an Indian citizen

Desirable Qualification:

• Fellowship of national or international academies
• National or international awards in science and technology

Experience (For Direct Recruitment):

• At least 25 years of R&D experience in academic institutions, research institutions, or science and technology organisations
• Out of the above, at least 6 years should be in managerial or administrative capacity for science and technology programmes, planning and development, budget, finance, and coordination
• R&D experience in any domain area of research or activities in Physical Sciences

Experience (For Deputation/Contract):

• Scientists or Technologists with the essential qualification and experience, working in Central/State Governments, Universities, Research Institutions, or Autonomous Organisations, and holding one of the following:
  • Analogous post, OR
  • 1 year regular service in Pay Level 16, OR
  • 3 years regular service in Pay Level 15, OR
  • 7 years regular service in Pay Level 14 (Grade Pay Rs. 10,000)

Age Limit

• Maximum age: 56 years as on 01 January 2026
• The Director will hold office for a maximum of 5 years or until superannuation at age 60, whichever is earlier

Salary

• Apex Scale — Pay Level 17: Rs. 2,25,000 per month (fixed) as per CCS (Revised Pay) Rules, 2016
• You will also receive DA, HRA, and other allowances as per Central Government rules

Selection Process

Selection will be carried out by a Search-cum-Selection Committee:

1. Screening of Applications/Nominations: The committee will review all applications and nominations received, including those from Fellows of Academies, Directors of National Laboratories, and Vice-Chancellors of Universities
2. Interview/Interaction: Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interaction with the Search-cum-Selection Committee
3. Document Verification: Verification of all original certificates and credentials

Note: The committee may also invite persons of high repute for consideration, even if they have not applied.

• Provide high-level academic and administrative leadership to the institute
• Identify and oversee research programmes and projects of national and international relevance in Physical Sciences
• Manage the overall administration of the institute including budget, finance, and planning
• Motivate and guide scientists to promote creativity, excellence, and original research
• Establish and maintain collaborations with national and international academic institutions and research bodies
• Facilitate multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional cooperation towards fulfilling the institute's research objectives
• Represent the institute at national and international forums, conferences, and policy discussions
