Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) has released notification for 173 Civil Judge (Junior Division) posts through the 33rd Bihar Judicial Service Exam. Candidates with LL.B. degree and 3 years of practice as Advocate can apply online. Last date to apply is 30 April 2026 (extended). Age limit is 22 to 35 years. Prelims exam on 30 May 2026.

Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) has released Advertisement No. 12/2026 for the 33rd Bihar Judicial Service (Competitive) Examination. This recruitment is for 173 Civil Judge (Junior Division) posts under the High Court of Patna, Government of Bihar. Who Can Apply?

  • You need an LL.B. degree from a university recognised by the Bar Council of India.
  • You must have at least 3 years of continuous practice as an Advocate from the date of enrollment.
  • Your practice experience must be certified by a Principal Judicial Officer or an Advocate with at least 10 years of standing.

Age Limit

  • Minimum age: 22 years (as on 01 August 2025)
  • Maximum age: 35 years for UR male candidates (as on 01 August 2022)
  • Maximum age: 40 years for women, SC, ST, OBC, BC, EBC, and EWS candidates

Salary

Selected candidates will get a monthly salary of Rs. 77,840 to Rs. 1,36,520 as per the 2nd National Judicial Pay Commission. You will also get DA, HRA, TA, Medical Allowance, Sumptuary Allowance, and Petrol Allowance.

Application Fee

  • Rs. 100 for all categories
  • Rs. 200 extra biometric fee if you do not have Aadhaar

Selection Process

The selection has three stages:

  1. Preliminary Exam (qualifying only) - MCQ based, held on 30 May 2026
  2. Mains Written Exam - Descriptive type papers
  3. Interview - 100 marks (minimum 35% needed to qualify)

Your final merit will be based on Mains + Interview marks.

Posting Location

Selected candidates will be posted in courts across Bihar state.

Responsibilities

  • Hear and decide civil and criminal cases in the Junior Division courts of Bihar
  • Record evidence and examine witnesses during court proceedings
  • Pass judgments and orders as per the law
  • Handle bail applications and remand matters
  • Manage court administration and maintain case records
  • Follow rules and guidelines set by the High Court of Patna

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

LL.B. degree from a university recognised by the Bar Council of India

Required Skills

Knowledge of Indian law, court procedures, legal drafting, Hindi and English language proficiency

22 - 35 years (as on 01 Aug 2022)

Experience

3.0 - No limit years

3 years of continuous practice as an Advocate from the date of enrollment. Experience must be certified by a Principal Judicial Officer or an Advocate with at least 10 years of standing.

Exam Pattern

Preliminary Exam (Qualifying Only)

The Prelims exam is MCQ (OMR-based). It is only for screening -- marks will not count in the final merit. There is no negative marking. Qualifying marks: 45% for UR, 40% for reserved categories.

Mains Written Exam (Descriptive)

The Mains exam has 5 compulsory papers and 3 optional papers (you choose any 3 out of 5 optional subjects). All papers are 3 hours long. Hindi and English papers are qualifying only (minimum 30 marks needed). Total scoring marks: 850.
