Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Assistant Professor Recruitment 2026 - 2 Posts

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), established in 1936, is a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 and a grant-in-aid Institute under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. TISS is a Grade I University as per NAAC assessment 2024. The School of Media and Cultural Studies (SMCS) at the Mumbai campus is inviting applications for two Assistant Professor posts on contract, initially for a period of one year and extendable based on performance and the Institute's requirements. These posts are unreserved, though candidates from reserved categories are welcome to apply.

Who Can Apply?

Essential Qualification

• A Master's degree with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale grading system) in Humanities and Social Sciences, or Media and Cultural Studies, or Film Making, Design, Fine Arts and allied fields from an Indian university — or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.

Eligibility A or B (at least one required)

• Option A: You must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, or a similar UGC-accredited test like SLET/SET. Alternatively, candidates who hold a Ph.D. degree awarded in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016 — and their amendments — are exempted from NET/SLET/SET. This exemption applies if: (a) the Ph.D. was awarded in regular mode, (b) the thesis was evaluated by at least two external examiners, (c) an open viva voce was conducted, (d) at least two research papers from the Ph.D. work are published (at least one in a referred journal), and (e) at least two papers were presented at UGC/ICSSR/CSIR-sponsored seminars/conferences. Candidates registered for Ph.D. before July 11, 2009, are governed by existing ordinances of the awarding institution.
• Option B: You hold a Ph.D. from a foreign university/institution ranked among the top 500 in the World University Rankings by QS, Times Higher Education (THE), or Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Desirable Qualification

• Ph.D. in the relevant field
• Two years' experience in academic teaching or industry

Other Conditions

• Candidates currently employed must produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer to appear for the interview.
• No TA/DA is payable for attending the interview.
• The selected candidate must join within 15 days of selection.

Salary

• Consolidated salary of Rs. 86,088 per month
• (Pay Band Rs. 15,600 – 39,100 with AGP Rs. 6,000 as per 6th CPC — consolidated equivalent)

Selection Process

Selection is done in the following stages:

1. Application Shortlisting: Applications are screened based on qualifications and experience. Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee an interview call — shortlisting is at TISS's discretion.
2. Document Verification: Shortlisted candidates must send scanned copies of their colour passport-size photograph and self-attested photocopies of all relevant certificates via email.
3. Online Interview: Eligible shortlisted candidates will be called for an online interview via email. TISS reserves the right to invite persons for interview who may not have applied through this advertisement.
